On Friday, July 7th Hui Xin campus students and staff held an end of year fire / emergency evacuation drill. The drill was scheduled for the day, but the actual time of the drill had not been disclosed to either teachers, students or parents. By having unannounced drills, we test our emergency procedures and readiness should an event occur.
Teachers had prepared students in advance, taught them the sound of the campus alarm and that when you hear an alarm, you always have to stay close to adults, parents, grandparents and teachers. It is important, not to run as you might fall or get lost, but to keep ears and eyes open, follow teachers and listen to instructions.
Parents had also been notified of the event day, to prepare children in advance and for some, to await exciting stories of their childs first evacuation drill at home.
The procedures were running smoothly, doors and gates were unlocked within 30 seconds of alarm, fire brigade was notified by the automatic alarm system (fire-brigade had been informed of our rehearsal in advance ofcourse). The campus nurse was first responder at the evacuation area and all routines were followed to point. We are happy to report that all classes were completely evacuated and all students accounted for in just 3 minutes and 52 seconds, which is a campus best and a very good, safe and realistic evacuation time.
We thank all teachers, children and families for supporting our commitment to safety!
Sincerely,
Anders S Christensen
Hui Xin Principal
