On June 14th parents and grandparents of Hui Xin campus were invited in to celebrate "Dragon Boat Festival" by making "Zong Zi" sticky rice dumplings, wrapped in bamboo leaf and boiled for snacks. It was also a spirit day, where students and teachers could wear either green, golden or yellow colors. K1 classes had decorated the lobby with dragon boat's in the water display and paddles of many designs and colors hanging from the ceiling.
What is Dragon Boat Festival? There are many takes on the Dragon Boat Festival which is celebrated in different ways around the world. Wearing a scented pouch, an egg, tying five-colored silk thread and hanging mugwort leaves above your door are all typical rituals which honors either Wu Zixu, Cao E or Qu Yuan who passed away on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.
The most popular interpretation of the traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, known as Duanwu and Tuen Ng Festival is in memory of a famous poet by the name Qu Yuan, who was exiled by the king of Chu who drowned in the Milou river in Hunan Province. At the time, it is said that rowers raced to find his body and threw sticky rice cakes known as Zongzi into the river, to keep the water dragon away.
