UNITY DAY
At Newton, Hui Xin campus we celebrated "Unity Day" on Wednesday, October 20th and focused on the importance of friendships, inclusion and teamwork. Unity Day is celebrated on the 3rd Wednesday of October and at Newton it also a spirit day where students and staff come to school in a show of pink and orange unity!
Orange is the color of the season and pink would, in the past, be considered a typical gender exclusive color for girls. Which is not the case anymore, hopefully, and we showed unity by all wearing these wonderful colors on this amazing day, regardless of gender.
At campus, students have helped to decorate our environment for the occasion, with musical notes that symbolize how, much like music, we all play a crucial part in making a harmony where every single contribution and note is important. Children also made a unity tree out of handprints, which symbolizes how we all grow stronger together and on the day every class and every child joined links to make a very very long unity chain of orange and pink filled with appreciation words and pictures .
As tradition, K2 students worked together to make large format art on the campus chalk wall with the theme of helping others, showing love and making friends. Children enjoyed many fun and exciting games, such as moving a mountain together and making a very big flower out of colorful tires. The activities were all about working together and how, when we work together, we can achieve amazing things.
While our educational focus is all on teamwork and togetherness on unity day the occasion and reason this day was established must be acknowledged too, because Unity Day is also known as "Bullying Prevention" day for adults and while all our students are still young and innocent, it is important that they learn the right values, what it means to be a good friend and what it means to accept all others, no matter their looks, language, nationality, wealth or abilities! Empathy and understanding while always looking for the good in people will help set our children on a path filled with happiness and love!
Love is always patient and kind.
It is never jealous and does not boast.
It is never rude or selfish.
It does not take offence and is not resentful.
Love takes no pleasure in other people's mistakes, but delight in their accomplishments.
It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope and it always perseveres.
