Lantern Festival Celebration
With the celebration of the Lantern Festival, we have officially marked the end of the Chinese New Year. It is now time to enjoy the year of the rooster! To mark this notable conclusion the students made traditional rice balls with their classes.
With a history of over 2,000 years, various traditional customs and activities are held during Lantern Festival that appeal to people of different ages, including watching lanterns and fireworks, guessing lantern riddles, performing folk dances, and eating yuanxiao (rice balls).
This year the students at Newton learned how to make the traditional rice ball food. Each class was provided with the ingredients by our kitchen then teachers instructed and assisted students in forming the rice balls. At the end of the day children were able to take the rice balls they made home to enjoy with their family.
It is important to everyone here at Newton that the children are encouraged to celebrate all world cultures. For many students this was an opportunity for them to learn about their own Chinese culture and for other it was an insight into Chinese customs. Everyone enjoyed this process of learning together and creating food with their hands. We all look forward to more fun international learning here at Newton!
