This coming Tuesday May 30th will mark the 5th day of the 5th lunar month and therefore the traditional Dragon Boat Festival. This celebration is dated back to honor the life of famed poet Qu Yuan. Being a liked historical figure people still cherish this day and do certain specific activities such as racing dragon boats and eating the zongzi rice dumplings.
Today at the kindergarten we let the children learn all about this great holiday and the many fun things to do to celebrate. Children gathered in our auditorium theater to watch a short film talking about the history of the holiday and the tale of Qu Yuan. Then children were taken to different set up preparation stations where parents, staff, and community members were making handmade zongzi! Children were amazed and inspired by the special care and skill it took to make these delicious treats. The were able to observe the different things that the dumplings can have inside such as dates, meat or red beans. Finally children looked at all the craft decorations made by the different classes. We had herb satchels for summer, dragons made from recycled materials, and even miniature beautiful dragon boats made from paper and popsicle sticks.
We are grateful for all who helped make this day fun and educational! Happy Dragon Boat Festival!
