It is always on our minds here at Newton to be kind and careful with our earth and its resources. Our staff and students are encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle.
The sustainability of our environment is very important and we instill these values in our students and families.
This year to celebrate earth day we focused on the protection of the plants and animals that are at risk of extinction. The school was decorated with many hand painted pictures of the various plants and animals that either are endangered or are at risk of being endangered.
Teachers talked with children about the importance of protecting these species habitats to help their populations thrive. This concept supports and explains to the children why we need to recycle and be aware of where our trash goes because it could be hurting our plant and animal friends. We hope that families at home also took the chance to talk with their child about protecting the earth and being a mindful resident.
Additionally we included a homework activity for families to do for earth day. We suggested that at home parents and kids work together to make a toy out of recycled things. When they brought them to school we had an exhibition of all the fun and fantastic things that families came up with. We were impressed to see such great variety and creativity from the students. We hope that this activity inspires children to use their imagination and make more things from used materials.
