At Newton kindergarten children understand the concept of culture and tradition through diversified Chinese and Western celebrations. On this special day children had prepared from home and came to school wearing traditional Chinese clothes, all ready for the many fun and exciting activities of the festival!
Mid-Autumn Bazaar & Handcraft
Every festival has its own customs and The Mid-Autumn festival is known for its moon cakes, sachets with Osmanthus blossoms and seasonal fruits. At the "Mid-Autumn Bazaar" teachers had prepared a showcase and workshop where children could see these unique features of the holiday and got the chance to use a "jade pestle" to press spices for beautiful scented sachets, while other students made rabbits out of clay and creatively decorated gorgeous moon lanterns.
Lantern appreciation at the Mid-Autumn festival
On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, another important activity is watching the lanterns and guessing lantern riddles together with our families after dinner. With the participation of our amazing K1 families, this traditional was incorporated into the Mid-Autumn celebrations and together with parents children had used recycled materials to create lots of creative lanterns. With teacher’s help students proudly hung their lanterns and riddles at campus to create a unique Lantern show and while enjoying the dazzling lanterns, everyone had to think creatively to solve the fun riddles!
Shadow play & Mid-Autumn story
The stars, moon, sky and universe is inspirational to children and adults alike. Why and how come the moon always changes its shape from crescent to full? and what's the secret of its glow? K2 students and teachers explored these questions and found the answers by studying the phases and position of the moon. K1 had fun playing shadow games and enjoyed teachers' vividly performed beautiful fairytale of Chang'e and the rabbit.
Little rabbits enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival
PN & N children transformed into cute little rabbits for their first big festival at kindergarten. Through fun and interesting games, carefully created by the teachers, our littlest rabbits had to move their bodies and jump to deliver moon cakes, pick up stars and also got to explore both the lantern show and market. With joy, excitement and big smiles children enjoyed their big first event at Newton Kindergarten!
Moon cakes full of love and from the heart
To be together, as a family, is symbolized in all things round, such as the sweet and round moon takes which demonstrate the true meaning of the holiday as they are gifted to the people we love the most and together with head chef Mr. Steven and pastry specialist Ms. Honey students had fun mixing, molding, rolling and pressing moon cakes into their iconic shapes.
Some of these hand-made treats were given to members of staff who are unable to leave Suzhou and will miss seeing their families over the short holiday. With the love and care of our family of students, everyone can feel the warmth and appreciation of the holiday!
As most holidays, the Mid-Autumn Festival is inseparable from the traditional foods served this time of year and the campus kitchen had prepared exquisite and delicious "two color bean-paste moon cakes" for our children to enjoy.
As the celebrations at campus comes to an end we wish all families a Happy Moon Festival together at home with clear sightings of a moon full of love!
