“Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.” -Malala Yousafzai
Newton Kindergarten is dedicated to developing our young learners into world-minded international people. It is important at an early age to foster these ideas of world community, cultural acceptance and human diversity. Outside of everyday experiences in an international learning environment, each year our students celebrate the world with our Festival of Colors. This week long event consists of different activities to teach students about the different countries, people, places and things around the world. Each year we find a new creative way to celebrate this festival. This year, 2017, we decide to encourage involvement from our very own international student families. Many parents were eager to volunteer their time to talk about experiences with other cultures and some with their very own unique cultures.
This year’s Festival of Colors we focused each day of the week on one specific country, based on the parent volunteer’s home countries. Monday was Malaysia, Tuesday was America, Wednesday was China, Thursday was South Korea, and Friday was India. The first half of the day the parents gave presentations to all the students discussing many different things about their home land. The children played games and made crafts that coincided with the new things they had learned. In the afternoon we had different parents come in to talk about their world travel experiences.
Malaysian presentation: Children learned about the many different cultures in Malaysia and many delicious fruits.
America presentation: Children learned about where America is in the world and how to do a traditional country western style dance.
China presentation: Children learned about the many different people of China and the different style clothes they all wear.
South Korea presentation: Children learned a Korean nursery rhyme bout three bears and how to make a sushi snack.
India presentation: Children learned about the many beautiful buildings in India and the variety of exotic animals.
Throughout life there are many opportunities to engage with cultures different from our own. It is important that we teach our children how to treat every one with respect and understanding so they may grow up to be considerate and compassionate people. We enjoy this Festival of Colors to honor and educate on the world as a community. We are grateful to all the wonderful parent participation and look forward to working together to make the world a better and happier place.
