Dear parents,
It has been a fun and busy month and great end to Spring! As temperatures heat up and we head into Summer please pay attention to
the daily weather. On rainy days your child can take their rain jacket and boots to school and for sunny days you can prepare sunscreen
lotion for them to use for outside play. Teachers will check the temperature and AQI and follow our standards for use of air conditioner
and air purifier. As a reminder for your reference, the air conditioner is turned on when the outside temperature is 28 degrees or higher,
outside play is cancelled when the outside temperature is 35 degrees or higher, and the air purifier is turned on when the AQI is 100 or
higher. We hope at home that you are also considering outside conditions when playing with your child.
We started this month with our Spring field trips. This year families went to enjoy the Suzhou Forest Amusement Park. The magic of the
day began with parents and kids decorating their own magic wands and dressing up in funny hats. We had a great time playing together
with all our wonderful families and we hope you also had a good time. Also, this month our K2 students took a memorable step towards
their first days of primary school by taking their kindergarten graduation photos. We hope K2 families are feeling proud of their child’s
progress, excited for the future and preparing well for first grade.
This month we completed our earthquake evacuation drill to teach students and staff how to handle this type of emergency together.
Classrooms coordinated how to properly leave the classroom and find their safe place on the campus. Managers exercised safety
procedures and classroom checks. The students were very organized and brave, and we were very proud to see how strong our children
are.
The month ended on a very happy note with Children’s Day. I would like to wish all of our children a very happy Children’s Day!! This
year we arranged different gifts for the children. The pre-nursery kids took home four little books you can read together with them. The
nursery kids received the signature blue Newton cap they will be able to where on sunny days. The K1 kids enjoyed a set of Newton
ceramic mugs. We gave our K2 kids a Newton pencil case with pencils made specially from recycled paper. Over our two-day celebration
for both sections we saw a wonderful variety and high level of talent. Some of our favorites were the children ’ s story plays, the
basketball show, and the songs about friendship and love. Thank you all for your thoughtful planning for this event. This year we are
happy to see good preparation, creative ideas and hard work from the parents. It is convenient that this performance activity for
parents comes before the students’ Summer Concert. With your recent experience being on stage you can take this opportunity to
talk with your child how to be a confident and happy performer. If they are feeling nervous you can share your experience with them
about being brave, having fun, and remembering to smile! Most days the students spend some time rehearsing their performances. We
have seen them coming along nicely and encourage teachers to continue with this positive energy and enthusiasm. We hope you are
looking forward to this show, I am sure your children are telling you all about what they are preparing.
This time of year is always more sentimental. This season always shows me how quickly and how much the children have grown. The
pre-nursery and nursery children are speaking more, finding independence and developing their own ideas. The K1 kids have come so
far from leaving nursery to being ready for K2. I also feel that our K2 kids are already acting like first graders. They have friendly social
skills using maturity and respect, and are always willing to help their teachers and friends. Though I have seen this, and feel this change
every year, I am always excited and it is a reason this month is special. This year our teachers have also shown how they are growing
with team building activities. This month the kindergarten organized for all staff to join in one of two group activities to further enhance
our support and consideration for one another. Each activity left everyone feeling closer and even more like a Newton family. In
addition to our children and teachers showing growth, our garden has shown great progress this year. In the south gardens the
vegetables have been bountiful. Also the grapevines decorating our train station have more and larger grapes than we have ever seen.
From our orange tree in the Autumn to our grapevines in the Spring, this year we have been lucky to see such beautiful fruit.
With many fun events and endless signs of growth, May has been another successful month at Newton, but we are not finished yet!
There is still more to look forward to as we wrap up the 2018/ 2019 school year, please still watch for more information. This month has
asked for more work and support from parents so I want to give an extra special thanks to you all this month for making it one we won’
t forget! We appreciate all that you do, it brings us all closer and helps us become a more supportive team for all the children.
