Growing up is an eternal topic, a silent yet ever-changing cycle. The transition from "early childhood" to "primary school" can be a smooth and seamless progression, or it can be a challenging and tumultuous process. As Professor Yongping Yu puts it, "The transition from kindergarten to primary school is not about crossing mountains, leaping over deep ravines, or entering a completely different life. Instead, it is a natural extension and transition of childhood."
The transitional period between early childhood and primary school is not just about the children; it also involves parents and teachers. To facilitate a better collaboration between home and school during this transitional period, we initiated the "Parent Learning Activities for Transitional Period" at the beginning of this semester. We invited two experienced teachers from Xingwan School to our kindergarten to share insights with parents regarding cultivating good habits, preparing suitable stationary, building knowledge and abilities, comparing the daily routines between kindergarten and primary school, etc. Through practical examples from years of experience, they aimed to help parents understand the key points and importance of the transitional period.
We look forward to working together with parents in laying a solid foundation for children to adapt to primary school life. Through collaboration, we can promote this journey of growth.
Visiting a primary school campus: What is a primary school really like? With curiosity and anticipation, we entered Xingwan School. The teachers at Xingwan School had meticulously arranged a "Campus Treasure Hunt" activity for us. Through a puzzle-seeking game, we completed the campus tour and created a poster depicting various scenes of the school using the found puzzle pieces. We also gained preliminary knowledge about the school library, playground, art studio, greenhouse, cafeteria, and so on. Each puzzle piece represented an initial impression and expectations for primary school life.
Exploring the primary school classrooms: How does a primary school classroom differ from kindergarten? We entered the classroom and together with the older students, we had a lesson and raised our hands to answer questions. Interesting math, fascinating stories, ... The lesson contents captivated us, and our level of anticipation reached its peak!
Participating in primary school activities: It turns out that activities in primary school are so rich and enjoyable. Oh! It's time for eye exercises! Following the older students, we stepped into the classrooms and discovered a "new world." We saw the eye exercise activity for the first time, and quickly joined in!
Discovering the life of a primary school student: Through the "Campus Treasure Hunt," our students gained more knowledge and longing for the life and learning in primary school. They also discovered many "differences" between kindergarten and primary school. After returning to the kindergarten, we created mind maps together to explore the differences between kindergarten and primary school.
As a Skillful Organizer: In primary school, everyone has their own dedicated desk, textbooks for various subjects, and loads of stationary. What are these, and how do they use them? Let's find out together! With so many learning materials, how can we quickly tidy and organize them? We had a competition in K2 to see who could organize theirs the fastest. Through practical activities and practice, they discovered and explored new organizational skills and techniques.
My Ideal Primary School: In the innocent words of the children, we can better understand their imaginations and aspirations for primary school. Some said things like, "my ideal primary school is like a 100-story underground house, with different subjects on each floor." Others said, "I want conduct a lot of science experiments," or "I hope there's a beautiful garden full of flowers," and some even said they wanted "a rainbow at the school entrance" or "a large self-service cafeteria with delicious food for lunch"... Today, our students became campus designers and created their own ideal primary school!
My Daily Schedule in Primary School: How do primary school students plan their day? After comparing the daily schedules of kindergarten and primary school, everyone wanted to create their own schedule. Thus, an exploration activity began with the understanding of clocks, comparing kindergarten and primary school routines, creating schedule templates, and finally producing their own primary school schedules!
My Graduation Bucket List: After three years of companionship, the last month before graduation has arrived, and everyone has a multitude of things they want to do. "I want to revisit the classrooms from nursery and K1," "I want to play with water again with my kindergarten friends," "I hope the tomatoes we planted in the garden will grow and bear fruit soon"... Let's listen to what the children want to do most during their last moments in kindergarten!
Time flies by, and children grow up in the blink of an eye. September is approaching, and the children will undergo an important transition, from being preschoolers to becoming genuine primary school students. At each stage of their growth, they need the support and companionship of caregivers to naturally complete each phase of development and transformation. May Newton's preschool transition curriculum help children establish a solid foundation, and may they continue to encounter and embrace the joys and wonders of growth throughout their journey!
