·Explore the Mysterious Moon
There are traditional Mid-Autumn Festival customs in China, such as moon-gazing, moon worshiping, and walking in the Mid-Autumn moonlight, all symbols of reunion and happiness. Follow us and explore the moon!
Making Moon Craters
What's on the moon? How are craters formed on the moon? Our students did scientific experiments to figure it out. They used flour as the moon's surface and stones and marbles as meteorites and asteroids to hit on the moon and make craters on the surface. Afterward, they used an eyedropper to drop different colors of soapy water, and voila! We created what looked like craters on the moon.
Phases of the Moon
The moon waxes and wanes. Why is the moon so round in the Mid-Autumn Festival? Why is it curved? How does the shape of the moon change? Let's find out using our homemade phase map!
XX: I like the waxing moon because it looks like curved eyebrows.
XX: I know E Mei (waxing moon); there is a mountain called E Mei; they have the same name.
XX: My favorite phase is a full moon because it means reunion; I like the meaning.
Light and Shadow of the Moon
Shadow puppet shows are an ancient Chinese folk art. This Mid-Autumn Festival, Newton teachers had a lot of ingenuity; they combined the traditional stories of Mid-Autumn Festival with shadow puppetry, allowing children an opportunity to understand Mid-Autumn Festival legends through shadow puppet performances. It was very festive.
After watching the shadow puppet show, the students also made their own shadow puppets. They projected the moon's shape through the clever use of light and shadows. The students performed their own shadow puppets on the moon, feeling the magic and fun of light and shadow.
·Dressing Up in Traditional Clothes
As a distinctive mark of the Chinese nation, Hanfu culture is also the embodiment and carrier of traditional culture. On this day, everyone wore traditional clothes to celebrate the festival. It's a Newton tradition that always adds a livelier atmosphere to our Mid-Autumn Festival activities.
·Making Folk Art
A cute paper bunny, a Mid-Autumn Festival-themed painting, a paper lantern made of recycled water bottles, eggshells, and flowers, and handmade moon cakes were just some of the folk art our students and teachers made together.
·Taste the Flavor of Mid-Autumn
Moon cakes are indispensable food for Mid-Autumn Festival. They are delicious and symbolize reunion. Our chef made sweet Newton moon cakes with natural fillings and ingredients, each full of love and good wishes for our students!
Enjoy the light of the full moon,
Wishing you a happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
